Encaustic – From the Greek word Enkaustikos, “to burn in”
Ancient Medium used in the Roman-Greco period. The encaustic medium is a special ratio of melted beeswax and tree sap (damar resin) that creates an archival painting medium.
Dating from the First Century BC through the second century AD, the medium was used to paint portraits on panels that were attached to mummy cases. We still see the preserved Fayum portraits in museums today.
The encaustic process was also used to decorate ship’s hulls providing artistic decoration along with the encaustic medium’s sealing quality.
